International Ocean Acidification Action Week
Ocean Acidification (OA) caused by CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels puts our seas at danger. Corals, cod, salmon, shrimps and shellfish are among the organisms at peril, together with whole ecosystems. The threats to nature are also a great concern for humans and affect everyone who benefits from nature and the sea – for work, for leisure, and for inspiration.
The threat from OA is in general poorly recognised in the governance of marinewaters. To raise awareness about OA, AirClim encourages other NGOs and all those concerned about our seas to take action to highlight OA. We hope that creative contacts with, for example, fishers, schools, artists, museums and journalists can be established so that information on OA will be widely spread in societies globally. In week 23, both the UN World Environment Day (5 June) and the UN World Ocean Day (8 June) are arranged. This week also kicks off the Bonn Climate Change Conference (June 3–13) and therefore provides an excellent backdrop to this year’s action week.
Materials on OA are available under the heading “Ocean Acidification WorkingGroup” at www.airclim.org.
