In November 2023, European Union (EU) policymakers agreed on new legislation to reduce methane emissions from the energy sector. The Regulation on methane emissions reductions in the energy sector (the “EU Methane Regulation”) requires the oil, gas and coal industries to curb methane emissions through a comprehensive set of monitoring and mitigation measures – both within the EU and, over time, across the full supply chain.
As with most EU legislation, effective implementation at the member state level will determine how successful the regulation ultimately is. To track this progress, the CSO-M coalition has launched a website that will be regularly updated with information on how far each member state has come in meeting its obligations.
