Northern Forests and Climate Change - Building an International Framework for Action

COP28 SIDE EVENT

8 December 2023

IUCN Pavilion

This event highlighted the important role Northern Forests play in achieving climate neutrality, as also evidenced in the Glasgow Leaders' Declaration on Forests and Land Use. Northern forests not only host a large amount of primary forests, huge biodiversity and many indigenous nations, they also represent almost half of the global carbon stock and hence need substantial protection
efforts. In an effort to increase attention for the role of Northern forests in the international climate debate, the Northern Forests ad Climate Change project aims to bring together scientists, indigenous peoples, NGOs and policy-makers to discuss how to increase the visibility of Northern Forests, improve their protection and enable a governance system within the international climate
policy framework.

The event was facilitated by Wendel Trio, Northern Forests and Climate Change Policy Coordinator with AirClim, The Air Pollution and Climate Secretariat.

Event speakers included:

Carl-Friedrich Schleussner, Head of Climate Science and Impact - Climate Analytics;
Karin Nutti Pilflykt, Forest Expert - Saami Council;
Jennifer Skene, Climate Solutions Policy Manager - Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC);
Jesús Maria Alquézar Sabadie, Socio-economic Analyst - European Commission DG Environment.
