UK breaches of EU air quality rules continue
The latest annual air quality compliance assessment published by the UK environment department DEFRA shows that 38 of the country’s 43 air quality zones exceeded the EU’s annual average NO2 limit of 40 micrograms per cubic metre (μg/m3) in 2012.
There were also breaches of the 200 μg/m3 hourly average limit for NO2 in Greater London and the city of Oxford, where respective levels of up to 281 μg/m3 and 252 μg/m3 were recorded. Simon Birkett, director of campaign group Clean Air in London (CAL) said the EU executive should launch infraction proceedings against the UK “urgently”.
