Post-Brexit agricultural plan in UK revealed

A new agricultural bill to replace the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) support scheme was presented by the UK government in January. At the core of the bill is a shift from CAP subsidies, in which the farmer is paid for the amount of land farmed, to a support scheme that instead gives payments for the “public goods” produced by the farmer, such as clean air and water, fertile soils and animal welfare. The bill has been criticized for not including trade regulations to protect domestic farmers from imports of food produced under lower standards of health, environmental protection and animal welfare.
