Boom in electric vans paves the way for Zero-Emission Zones

With the rapid growth of electric vans (e-vans) in Europe, all European capitals could introduce zero-emission freight zones by 2030, supported by a sufficient supply of locally produced e-vans, a new T&E analysis reveals. By 2026, more e-van models will be available than diesel or petrol versions, and by 2027, battery-electric vans will be cheaper to purchase than their diesel counterparts.

Between 2025 and 2030, 3.9 million e-vans are projected to be sold in the EU and UK—more than enough to equip all 27 EU capitals and London with zero-emission freight zones. Fleets with over 100 vans would account for just 32% of the available supply. Even if zones expanded to cover fleets with over 50 or 20 vans, there would still be enough e-vans to meet demand. By 2030, large petrol and diesel van fleets could disappear from European capitals entirely.

E-vans are central to decarbonising urban centres. Zero-emission zones, which restrict access to only emission-free vehicles and active mobility, are gaining momentum across Europe. Currently, 35 such zones are planned for the 2030s, with 19 set to launch by 2025. Most are freight-focused, ensuring e-vans will play a leading role in transforming city streets.
